Today, In Class

Kids are doing an art project based on Dante's Inferno.

Class: We get to use crayons?! YES!

Kid: Look! I color-coded Hell!

Other Kid: Look at my Hell! It's got a smiley-face sun! It's a happy hell!

Another Kid: Well, I can make my Hell prettier than your Hell.

Note: These kids are sixteen years old.

I love The Inferno...so jealous. I want to color code hell. :-(

PS...there is a website where you can take a quiz to see what layer of hell you would be in. Not for students (LOL) but you might have fun with it.

I think I want your life, beth. I used to work with teens, and while middle school is my favorite age, I would love to teach high school English. *sigh* Can I be you when I grow up?

The funniest part of this whole story was when I read their age... 16! HAHA!!

I love the idea of colorizing Hell. 16 year olds are so fun!

I have to admit ... I still get a bit excited when I get to color with crayons with my kids! :-) And I'm ... well ... older than 16! :-) Loved the story ... very funny!

Hahaha, sounds like me and my classmates. Lol!

My English teacher hates Inferno. He refuses to read it in class. That kind of annoys me -- I want to be able to say I've read it. So I have to see if I can find my dad's copy.

Oh, and I finished The Forest of Hands and Teeth. Started reading it yesterday. Finished it in a couple hours. My mom finished it today. We couldn't put it down. Thanks so much for sending it to me! :D

You win, although I have a decent runner-up

Scene is set as "Friar Lawrence's cell."

Kid: Mrs. L, what's a cell?

Me: (seeing it as a teachable moment) What do you guys think a cell is?

Kids: Jail, prison, where my uncle lives, et cetera

Me: What did we say a friar is?

Kid: Like, a priest.

Me: So where does he live?

Kid: In a cell.

Me: (Give my best teacher look)

Kid: With a bunch of other priests. Well, friars.

Me: So why did he live in a cell?

Another Kid: Because priests aren't allowed to have anything good.

First Kid: Yeah, like sex.

:) ...I'm proud to say I have a map of Dante's hell on my wall!! It's ALWAYS fascinated me!! U should tell ur kiddos to check out 'What Dreams May Come' - the movie with Robin Williams. It's based on Dante. Robin's wife commits suicide after she loses a child, and he must go thru the rings of hell to get to her. Cuba Gooding Jr. is Virgil! GREAT MOVIE!!! VISUALLY STUNNING!!!
