A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to School

My mom's a fifth grade teacher. She offered for one of her students to read the book. Which is great! I would love to get a kid's perspective on my book--I don't feel comfortable asking my own students to read it--and it's a bit young for them anyway--so getting a high reading level fifth grader to read my book would be just brilliant.

But the father of the girl is ultra conservative and worried about the magic in the book, and thinking about keeping it from her.

I've been banned before I've been published!!

And to top it off--I'm very Christian and intended part of the message of the novel to have subtle Christian overtones!

I am at a loss for words. Really.
i guess to each his own.

So congrats on getting banned :)

Actually, I do think it is kind of cool! ;) Is it wrong that one of my goals is not just to be a bestselling author, but also a banned one? Banned books are, after all, always the best!

Actually this might be an important message for you. A lot of fundamentalists Christians do not allow their children to read about magic. So if they are your intended audience, you might have a problem there. For example Harry Potter is banned in my brother's household.

I've found a couple of blogs on the net for Christian agents. It might be worth dropping them a line to pick their brains to see what they think of your situation... or even other Christian or inspirational authors.

Nixy--You do make a good point, but there's no way that I can write anything other than in the fantasy or sci fi genre, and I do prefer to write for children. My primary target audience is children, but I do know that some fundamental Christians will inherently have a problem with the genre. I don't think there's anything I can do but chalk those potential readers up as a loss--but no one will appeal to everyone anyway!

(PS: Just checked out your blog--it looks very professional! I'm off to explore more of it now!)

Beth,

Yes, it's impossible to please everyone, and I think there at least three different opinions on this subject.

1. All magic users are in the wrong. People who have this opinion probably can't be won over by any fantasy tale.

2. Magic users spoken poorly of in the Bible (necromancers, witches, sorcerers, etc.) are in the wrong, but generic magicians are not (possibly due to The Three Magi, some people referring to Daniel as a magician, and so on).

3. Everything is fine. This group is quite large, which means you shouldn't have much trouble getting your book published, for this particular reason.

Justus--I'm not worried! Banned books = good books to me! :)
