Today in Class: Invaders

Today in class, we're studying Chinese literature. I was giving a little background on China, and the Great Wall came up.

Me: The Great Wall was used to keep out invaders from the north. What invaders were coming into China?

Kid: The Mongolians!

Me: Exactly! What's a famous Mongolian invader who attacked China?

Kid: Chaka Khan!

Me: *facepalm*

I LOVE IT!

I did a Maro Polo play with my students last year. When Kublai Khan showed MP his palace, he asked what Marco thought.

Marco Polo was supposed to say something like "tremendous". Instead he said "terrifying!"

It was too fun.

LOL. You gotta love them.

Why is it everything today is so hilarious? The facepalm at the end makes all the difference. :)
(I'd say lol, but my new internet laugh is something along the lines of Mwahahaha! So I'll say that instead.)
Mwahahaha!

LOL! You have the funniest students. My high school classes were never that entertaining!

You know that song will be in my head the rest of the day!
(though I haven't thought about Chaka khan in years. I may have to google the video for fun now!)

You should have a notebook or journal and jot down funny things your students say. I have one for each of my children. I used to teach third grade, I wish I had done it then!! Kids are hilarious!

That is so awesome. The fact that your students even know that name should be worth some bonus points. Only if they can sing the song though. Thanks for sharing, Beth. I had to pass your story on to co-workers. We all needed the laugh.

Funny! Kinda like what I read last night in Christopher Moore's Lamb where Biff said, "you know how why the Vegemites decided to smite the Marmites?"

And also, love your pun: the Great Wall came up. :)

Isn't teaching sometimes hilarious?!?

One of my Greek teenagers recently stunned me by asking in front of the whole class,

"What's a PERVERTED VERB...?"
It took me a moment to work out that he meant "IRREGULAR VERB"
BUT
in Greek the expression 'anomala' means BOTH perverted and irregular...wow, the mind boggles doesn't it?...
