Today in Class: Midterms

I'm grading midterms. (So I'm two weeks late in grading them. Don't judge me.)

Question #5. What did Socrates mean by his quote, "All I know is that I know nothing?" Apply your answer to his philosophy.

Kid's Answer: That means people think they know alot of thinks, but when all said and done they dont really know nuthing.

Darn us, all thinking we know a lot of thinks.

[Edited to add: I just got to the kid whose answer on the question about linking the Epic of Gilgamesh to Ancient Sumerian belief systems was simply: "Gilgamesh was a douchebag." It's not the right answer, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to give him partial credit.]

  1. LOL. I guess I don't know a lot of thinks. What a cute kid.

  6. What would we do without high school papers to laugh at?

    Love it!

  7. At least they didn't cheat ;-)

And I love that "Gilgamesh is a douchebag" comment! Even though I've never read/studied Gilgamesh :-)

  8. These make my day. Seriously. As a teacher they probably make you sad and a little alcoholic, but they totally make my day.

Also: is it sad that I don't know anything about Gilgamesh besides the fact that his name is Gilgamesh? Say no.

  10. I guess I've got another think coming....

  11. The first one sounds like they've been reading Dr. Seuss. I'd be tempted to give the second one partial credit too.

  12. I DO know a lot of thinks, thank you very much. :P
You know, whenever you post things your students say, I start to really miss my senior english class. We were a bunch of idiots, and we loved it. :)
(You should've heard our conversations about Oedopus and Antigone, it would've made any english teacher - scratch that, any teacher - cringe. Poor Ms. Scheele never had a chance!)

  13. Do you mean it wasn't the desired answer, or it wasn't a correct answer. Cuz, yanno...

I don't know a lot of thinks either.

  14. I love reading kids funny answers, which many times are more clever than the real answer would have been! (at least funnier)
I used to teach grade school and I wish I kept a journal with the funny things kids say. I do have a journal for each of my children with their funnies though!
