Today, in Class...

We're watching The Last Samurai in class (to compare the romanticism of the samurai age to Ryunsuke Akutagawa literature).

After a scene where it looks like the main character, played by Tom Cruise, is going to die:

Kid 1: Oh no! They're going to kill him!

Kid 2: Shut up, they're not going to kill Tom Cruise.

If you ever get a chance to watch a room full of kids watching a movie, do it. They are so funny!!!

  1. Beth, that started my day out with a laugh, and as you know, I needed to laugh! Funny, and I'm with kid 2! Although they did kill off Mel Gibson one time. :)

  2. You're watching a rated R movie in your class??? I LOVE that movie, but it's a bit violent. Great choice, though. :)

  3. Yeah, I've watched a room full of kids watch a movie. Priceless! When I was teaching high school we would watch "Spartacus" and "A Funny thing happened on the way to the Forum." I'm surprised like Glam that your school would allow an R rated movie. Is it some kind of edited version? Our school was very picky about that kind of thing.

  4. Oh my kids love that movie. I'm suprised the school let you show it because of the violence factor, although I think it does carry a great message.

  5. I never did see that. But, the story is funny! Have you heard of the book The Last Samurai by Helen Dewitt?

  6. I've overheard people give the exact same logic to Sawyer between the 1-2 season of LOST. Quote: "Oh, they won't kill off Sawyer. Sawyer is just too HOT to die!"

Forced me to dive into the magazine rack to stifle my laughter.

  7. Wait - I forget. Do they kill him or not? I think they do.
I remember watching The Perfect Storm and my jaw dropping to the ground at the end.

Can I be in your class?

  8. :)

My school allows us to watch R rated movies as long as they are relevant. And I don't show the entire thing.

Sure, y'all can come to my class any time! :)
